Division is one of those things people have mysteriously come to think of as a bad thing. Now, if they were talking about high school math a younger me might have agreed, but usually people are talking about division in a broader sense like religion, finances, family, etc. I have to disagree with them, however, on one point – politics. I believe this country was built on ideas and ideas come from people and people come from pods transported here by our space faring ancestors. Wait. That’s not true. I must have been day dreaming again. No, the truth is we all come from a different place on planet earth. Some of us may come from the same country or family but no one person comes from exactly the same place in life. We are all different and we all have different backgrounds. So why does anyone expect us all to agree or get on board with their plans and then demonize us if we don’t? I thought this country was built on ideas from different people, not from robots who have to be plugged in every night (Could you imagine the light bill?).
The truth is, it’s okay to be divided on some issues. Being divided means you have your own opinion. Why should that be forbidden or traded away for a fallacious and temporary pipe dream, like this idea of “Why can’t we all just get along”? I’ll tell you why. We aren’t all the same. It’s a good thing to have your own opinion. It means you care about something. It means you have the ability to think for yourself on important issues.
These people who talk about harmonious government working together are campaigning. Don’t let them scare you by spewing negative rhetoric about divided partisan government. They want harmonious government only as long as it means everyone agreeing with them, not you.
There are almost seven billion people on this planet. That means there are about seven billion different ideas about how things should be done. People don’t think alike about everything and that’s okay. If anyone comes and tells you that we should all think like them, watch out. This is a pretty good sign that he or she is power-hungry and maybe even a little narcissistic. Now, barring God himself coming down from heaven and giving you instructions (Wait…), you have a responsibility to think for yourself and guess what, if you think for yourself the world as we know it will have some division.
These politicians talking bad about partisanship are just as responsible as their opponents for divided government. One side can always blame the other side for slowing things down or not giving in but at then end of the day, they do the same thing. Good! That’s what we elected them for – to stand their ground as much as possible.
The Constitution was written and agreed upon by a divided government. Not all the founding fathers thought exactly alike. The Bill of Rights was created the same way. You can bet that not one significant thing done by our government was done without some objection.
I’m writing this so anyone who reads it who will remember it when the campaigning gets into full swing. These people are no different than you but a lot of them talk a good game. An honest campaign is run on ideas, not rhetoric. So free yourself up from thinking that any politician knows whats best for you. Only you know what best for you and for this country. Political games are not the fuel of this country. You are.
The important thing is that we all want America to work, even if we have different ideas of what that means.
